Amy Poehler‘s return to the “Saturday Night Live” stage provided the perfect opportunity for several of her former castmates to swing by 30 Rock.
After a Trump Cabinet-spoofing cold open shocked the live studio audience via the return of Tina Fey, Poehler revealed she had even more pull while divebombing into Colin Jost and Michael Che‘s “Weekend Update” segment. Poehler, who once sat behind the “Update” newsdesk, criticized a weak punchline from Jost and called for a “joke-off.”
The semi-recurring segment on “Weekend Update” isn’t quite as beloved as a Che and Jost’s regular joke swap, but it has a similar competitive spirit at its heart. In short, multiple “SNL” cast members riff a punchline to the same setup. (In this case, the prompt was “a woman in Tennessee broke a record by giving birth to a 13-pound baby.”) Poehler’s interruption rang the dinner bell for other former “Update” hosts, as Fey and late-night host Seth Meyers crammed behind the desk to play along.
“My first wife and my second wife,” Poehler quipped.
The “SNL” veterans were quickly off and running.
“A woman gave birth to a 13-pound baby. The new baby’s name is AHHH,” Fey chimed in.
“[The baby] slapped the doctor on his ass,” Poehler offered.
Fey added that the 13-pound Tennessee baby weighed so much because “the baby is also pregnant.”
Representing the new guard, Che chimed in that the mother “zipped around the room like a deflated balloon.” Jost said that the baby’s “nickname was Magician, because he basically sawed his mother in half.”
